Rethinking an Everyday Passage

This staircase carried the household's daily traffic, the route to the laundry room, office, and playroom, but it hadn't kept pace with the way the family actually lived.

Dark, narrow, and squeaky, with cramped treads that turned a dozen daily trips into a minor chore, it was cut off from the office nook by a solid wall. A long run of old fashion vertical wood paneling left the entire stairwell feeling dated and closed in.

The goal was to transform the staircase from a passageway into an architectural feature, one that felt lighter, more connected, and purposeful.

Designing Before Building

Before construction began, the complete design was developed in a detailed SketchUp model, including the paneling, stepped shelving, custom railing, and extended landing. This allowed the clients to see exactly how the finished space would look and, more importantly, how the design addressed the concerns and functional challenges they had with the existing staircase. Once approved, the model became a precise reference for the contractor and carpenter, helping translate the design intent into the finished work.

Because the staircase was central to the family's daily movement through the home, minimizing disruption was essential. Demolition did not begin until all materials and finishes had been selected and acquired. Much of the carpentry was prepared off-site, with stair treads and large sections of paneling measured, cut, and assembled in advance, ready for installation.

Subcontractors were carefully scheduled and coordinated—from carpentry and lighting to painting—to keep the work moving efficiently while minimizing disruption to the household. The result was a complex transformation completed in a remarkably short period of time.

Light, Rhythm & Movement

The stairs themselves became an opportunity to change the experience of moving through the space.

We widened the treads and introduced warm underlighting beneath each step, creating a softer and more inviting descent. Pale wall paneling replaced the heavy original surfaces, while a custom metal and wood railing became a sculptural architectural element within the stairwell.

Together, these changes brought light, rhythm, and warmth to what had once been a dark and utilitarian passage.

Connecting Without Closing In

At the upper landing, custom shelving steps down alongside the stair and wraps toward the master bedroom, creating a subtle sense of privacy without closing the space off.

The wall separating the staircase from the office nook was replaced with slender vertical louvers. Light and sightlines can now pass between the spaces, while the louvers maintain a gentle sense of separation and definition.

A Place to Arrive

At the begining of the stairs, a custom built-in breaks up the expanse of paneling, echoing the shelving above while providing ambient lighting and a place for the clients to display their own collections.

The final step was extended outward, turning the last moment of the descent into a deliberate arrival rather than simply the end of a flight.

What had once been a dark, overlooked route through the lower level became one of its defining architectural moments, functional, connected, and quietly expressive.
